Lumbar spinal fusion is a technique that permanently fuses or joins together one or more bony vertebrae of the spine, preventing abnormal movement and, therefore, stabilizing the spine, restoring the normal disc space between the bones.
This fusion can be performed without damage to the overall movement of the spine.
This video demonstrates how we perform this procedure:
In this procedure, an incision is made and muscle is detached. Then, a small opening is made in the bone portion of the lumbar spine for removal of the damaged discs. After that, the space between the bones is filled with a spacer bone graft.
With the removal of the discs and restoration of the space between the bones, pinched nerves are relieved. Then, the vertebrae are fixed with a metal plate and screws.
In the end, bone grafts are placed along the segments, the body heals the grafts which join the vertebrae together.
Our team performs this procedure with great expertise, in association with the team of spine surgeons of CLÍNICA ORTHOS Medical Group.
